High risk pregnancy

Pregnancy is a physiological event in the life of a woman. Certain conditions may however put both the mother and the baby at a substantial risk. These risk factors maybe present either before pregnancy or appear during the course of it.

It is important to identify these risk factors early in order to safeguard the life of both mother and the baby, by having more frequent medical visits and taking precautions as advised by your obstetrician.

Some of the conditions which categorize as high risk pregnancy are-

  1. Teenage pregnancy (age <20 years)
  2. Elderly patient (age > 35 years)
  3. Obesity (BMI > 30kg/sq MTR)
  4. Malnutrition ( Weight < 45kg)
  5. Pre-existing medical conditions like Diabetes mellitus, Hypertension, autoimmune disorders, Anemia, Asthma, Kidney, thyroid disorders, thrombocytopenia and other coagulation disorders.
  6. Pre-existing gynecological abnormalities like structural abnormalities of uterus or cervix, uterine fibroids, cancer of cervix, uterus, ovaries.
  7. Genetic disorders in parents or family history of children born with genetic disorders
  8. Pregnancy related conditions like twin/triplet pregnancy, gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, placental abruption, previous cesarean section/s, history of uterine rupture.
  9. In-vitro fertilization
  10. Bad Obstetric History ( history of multiple miscarriages)

All of the above are associated with high risk of complications either affecting the course of pregnancy or increasing the maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Regular health check ups are a must in these cases.
